Bacterial meningitis remains a major killer in 25 African countries today in an area known as the meningitis belt.  In 2009, more than 88,000 people in Africa were struck by meningitis.  More than 25,000 people died and more than 250,000 were sickened in the largest epidemic ever recorded in history in 1996/1997.  Today, PATH's successful product development partnership known as the Meningitis Vaccine Project, has facilitated the creation and production of the first African meningitis vaccine at ~50 cents a dose!  This vaccine's creation and distribution in Africa is being up-scaled currently and it's effects are already making history.

This documentary I stumbled across today highlights the epidemic in Africa in 2007 and the realities that come with this terrible disease....was featured in a BBC series called Kill or Cure. See here>

  • Also, today begins the Pacific Health Summit in Seattle.  This year's topic theme is Vaccines: Harnessing Opportunity in the 21st Century.  Want more information and background papers?  Stay tuned in here: http://www.pacifichealthsummit.org/default.aspx

The goal of the Pacific Health Summit is to connect science, industry, and policy for a healthier world. Every June we convene top decision-makers in science, policy, industry, medicine, and public health to discuss how to realize the dream of a healthier future through the effective utilization of scientific advances combined with industrial innovation and appropriate policies. Each year we focus our discussion on an issue of critical importance; maternal and newborn health in 2010, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in 2009, malnutrition in 2008, and pandemic influenza in 2007.

In 2011, the Summit will take place in Seattle, and our theme will be vaccines.

The Summit is a year-round process. In addition to the June meeting, the Summit provides an ongoing forum for world leaders to improve health by working together to grapple with problems and solutions, share best practices, and forge effective collaborations.

***HISTORIC MOMENT IN GH PARTNERSHIPS

Donors committed US$ 4.3 billion at the first pledging conference held by the GAVI Alliance. This exceeds an initial target of $3.7 billion, enabling GAVI to reach more children faster than planned and to accelerate the introduction of new vaccines. A portion of the pledges are conditional upon GAVI raising additional funds from new donors in the future. Today’s pledges bring GAVI’s total available resources for the period 2011 to 2015 to $ 7.6 billion.

The US's pledged $450 million over the next 3 years showing the commitment of our government/administration to save lives.  The US cares about global health and development.  This is a great day for children in the developing world who will now be afforded a shot at life.

How exciting to finally have GREAT news in the financial arena of global health.  The gap has now been filled and GAVI has the opportunity to scale-up treatment and prevention efforts to save lives like never before!  Big day for the world, with nations taking a big step in the right direction.

The GAVI Pledging Conference has begun in London to close the gap in funding for vaccines.  See who has pledged what here as the updates come in: http://www.gavialliance.org/resources/GAVI_Pledging____Key_Outcomes.pdf
Follow GAVI news here: http://www.gavialliance.org/about/pledging_conference/index.php  I hope the world shows up to bring an attitude like the resolute David Cameron, who refused to "balance the budget on the backs of the poor" and choose not to skip-out on financing and upholding pledges to GAVI.

A New Foundation for Vaccine Research has emerged in Washington, DC!

Fourteen leading scientists and advocacy experts in vaccines and infectious diseases have announced the formation of a new international Foundation to advance and accelerate vaccine research and development against infectious diseases. The Foundation for Vaccine Research’s mission is to raise global awareness of the need for increased, long-term, flexible funding for vaccine research against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other infectious diseases, including neglected tropical diseases, as well as universal vaccines for influenza and a vaccine to avert pandemic influenza.

The Foundation's activities will focus on persuading opinion leaders, policymakers inside and outside government, and other decision makers of the benefits and safety of vaccines and the merits of increased investment in vaccine research. The Foundation will seek to mobilize resources internationally and on a large scale to finance vaccine research globally, with a special focus on securing new assets and the development of innovative financing mechanisms. The Foundation will also conduct televised fundraising events and benefit concerts, with 100 percent of publicly donated funds going directly to teams of scientists and their institutions. The Foundation will also engage with the anti-vaccine movement to persuade them of the benefits of vaccines.
